Laura Rethmann

I should warn you. By following this blog you can't expect much. Just the ocassional funny pictures, songs that probably mean nothing to you, as well as my sad attempt of writing and painting. I hope you'll laugh, reblog, and quote my favorite movies, but if you are utterly disgusted and move on, it's quite alright. That's what Tumblr is for. :)
Feedback and thoughts on my work would be loved!

haven’t written in a while..

Very often I’ve questioned all the things we do
And wondered if we’re ever going to get a clue
I didn’t understand so I’m the first to admit
There were a few times that I was ready to quit

Then a moment hit me right in the head
Exposing the wounds the world has bled
That opened up my eyes and I started to see
This earth needs help and is counting on me

I write words to explain so you all understand
Across the seas and mountains all over this land
If we want to leave a place for our kids to live
We need to realize now is the time to give

So try to go the extra mile every once in a while
When you pass another try to flash them a smile
Please do for others just as much as you can
Because I think that was part of the original plan

While newspapers and television talk about the lives of celebrities, the chief of the Kayapo tribe received the worst news of his life: Dilma, “The new president of Brazil, has given approval to build a huge hydroelectric plant (the third largest in the world). It is the death sentence for all the people near the river because the dam will flood 400,000 hectares of forest. More than 40,000 Natives will have to find another place to live. The natural habitat destruction, deforestation and the disappearance of many species is a fact. What moves me in my very bowels , making me ashamed of being part of Western culture, is the reaction of the chief of the Kayapo community when he learned of the decision—his gesture of dignity and helplessness before the advance of capitalist progress, modern predatory civilization that does not respect the differences …But we know that a picture is worth a thousand words, showing the reality of the true price of our bourgeois “quality of life”

Underneath my outside face,
There’s a face that none can see.
A little less smiley,
A little less sure,
But a whole lot more like me.

A little less smiley,

A little less sure,

But a whole lot more like me.

White Sea. Nightly thoughts.

Pillows of clouds
Rest my head
I look up
And it is there
Pictures of the sky
Plato to my eyes
Mold of my mind

Looking down there
All the white
That I see
Never ends
People fly over
People look up and wonder
What it could be…
Like to sail…
The White Sea
